1. 昆明小贩城管  Kūnmíng xiǎofàn chéngguǎn –  The battle continues between China’s street vendors and its “city inspectors,” or chéngguǎn  (like police, but different…). Circulating online today are videos taken on pedestrian camera-phones and images snatched from security cameras which document the beating of two defenseless street vendors by a gang of up to eight chengguan in Kunming, Yunnan. The vendors, a married couple, were assaulted because they were unable to pay the fine for setting up their cart, as they had not had the chance to earn any money that morning.  They did not go down without a fight; one chengguan received a brick to the head. Here’s the story in Chinese.

2. 淘宝寿衣门  táobǎo shòuyī mén – “Taobao burial shroud scandal” is the second most-searched term today. A VIP customer on Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao posted so many negative reviews of vendors on the site that, as some netizens have put it, “She got what she asked for”: one clothing merchant, fed up with the woman’s complaints over an ill-fitting dress, sent her an unmarked package containing a child-sized burial shroud. A threatening message: “You don’t like our clothes? You can go to hell…in them”—save for the fact that the insult seems to be directed not at her, but rather at the child she may or may not have. The merchant is denying having sent the package, the woman is claiming that it did, Taobao is threatening to punish the merchant, and netizens think the Taobao VIP is either just whiny or trying to make a buck in compensation. 3. 老师遭校长咬头 lǎoshī zāo xiàozhǎng yǎo tóu – “Teacher Bitten by School Principal”: After receiving “IOU’s” in place of compulsory yearly tax rebates six years in a row, teacher Zhang Dabin went to the principal of his school in Nanyang, Henan province to settle matters. Unfortunately, Mr. Principal was not in the mood to talk corruption, or to engage in anything resembling rational discourse, and instead lunged in to bite his interlocutor’s head, ravenously enough to send him to the emergency room. 4. 清理三非外国人 qīnglǐ sān fēi wàiguórén – Starting on May 15 and continuing through the end of August, the Beijing municipal government will be launching an initiative to “clear out” foreigners who reside illegally in the city. Official news reports are describing the initiative’s target as “The Three Illegals”: illegal border-crossers, illegal residents, and illegal workers. A related netizen search today is “what is an illegal foreigner?” and some Sina Weibo users, mocking the policy as an excuse to kick out Filipino residents during this sensitive time, are playing on the word for Filipino in Chinese, “Fēilǜbīn,” part of which is  homophonous with “fēi,” for illegal. 5. 幼儿园发霉大米 Yòu’éryuán fāméi dàmǐ – “Moldy Corn Kindergarten”: When kindergartners in a school in Chongqing all began vomiting and suffering severe stomach aches, parents did some of their own reconnaissance and paid a visit to the school’s kitchen, whereupon they discovered batches of rotten food that the school was still deeming fit for lunchtime. The parents went on strike, pulling their students out of the school and in the end forcing its administration to hire a new principal. Here’s the story in Chinese.

6. 朱珠 Zhū Zhū -  Compromising photos have surfaced of famous Chinese MTV host, actress, and singer Zhu Zhu locked in a kiss with Agnelli family heir and Juventus Football Club boss John Elkann, during Juventus’ championship match for the 28th Serie A title last weekend. 7. 林毅夫案 Lín Yìfū àn – A Chinese Buddhist master has issued a public plea urging Taiwan’s Ma Ying-jeou to grant pardon to World Bank vice president Justin Yifu Lin, and to allow him to visit his family in Taiwan. Lin defected to the Chinese mainland from Taiwan years ago and is wanted in Taiwan on charges of desertion. Here’s the story in Chinese.

8. 韶钢事故 Sháogāng shìgù – Yesterday afternoon, a sudden explosion on a construction site in Guangdong killed nine workers and severely injured six. The construction workers were all on project for Guangdong Shaoguan Iron and Steel Company. Here’s the story in Chinese.

9. 洗脑毒品 xǐnǎo dúpǐn – “Brainwashing Drug”: Today a frenzy of discussion circled around a recent article in the Daily Mail about the Columbian narcotic “Devil’s Breath,” or  Scopolamine, reportedly used by criminals to wipe victims’ memories and make them commit acts against their will. In response to what it perceived as a wave of terror striking China’s online community, the Jiangning branch of the Nanjing Municipal Public Security Bureau wrote on its official microblog that readers need not worry: the drug comes from a flower, the datura stramonium (the Nanjing PSB does not cite this flower’s English nicknames, among which are “lokoweed,” “hell’s bells,” and “pricklyburr”), which an ancient great of  traditional Chinese medicine, Hua Tuo, is said to have used as a major ingredient in one of his most effective anesthetic potions. 10. 四川富豪新加坡撞车身亡 Sìchuān fùháo Xīnjiāpō zhuàngchēshēnwáng – On May 12 a late night car crash at a city intersection in Singapore took the lives of two drivers and their respective passengers. At 4 AM, a taxi collided with the side of a red Ferrari, when the sports car sped through a traffic light. The Ferrari driver, a wealthy man from Sichuan, and his unidentified female passenger, died instantly; the 52 year-old Singaporean taxi driver and his passenger, a young woman from Japan, died shortly thereafter in the hospital. 7. 汶川否认县长贪污 Wènchuān fǒurèn xiànzhǎng tānwū – Scrambling to resolve what netizens are all calling a PR crisis, the government of Wenchuan, Sichuan (epicenter of the May 2008 earthquake) claims to have  conducted a detailed investigation of corruption, in response to recent media accusations that Wenchuan mayor Zhang Tongrong has been involved in bribery. 7. 晴空颠簸 qíngkōng diānbǒ – China Southern CZ3525 passenger flight experienced extreme turbulence en route to Shanghai Thursday afternoon. 11 passengers who weren’t buckled in properly suffered injuries from a sudden drop that lasted roughly 15 seconds. After the plane safely landed, passengers posted messages about their scary experiences on microblog accounts. 6. 上海美罗城女厕被偷拍 měiluóchéng nǚcèsuǒ zāo tōupāi – An anonymous user claimed on an online forum that secret cameramen have staked out in women’s bathroom stalls in a mall in Shanghai to record indecent videos for Japanese AV companies. The user posted a long string of pictures showing women unknowingly exposed in the lavatory environment with no censors. 1. 跳下手术台追打医生 tiàoxià shǒushùtái zhuīdǎ  yīshēng – On the morning of last Saturday in Hubei, a hospital patient preparing for surgery on the operating table suddenly leapt off and began beating the surgeons and doctors in the room. Security camera footages made its way onto the Internet, attracting a great deal of attention from users (see picture). The doctors of the hospital say that the patient reacted strongly to a disagreement with the doctor during the routine information verification session right before surgery. 2. 自习座收费 zìxízuò shōufèi – A college student from Tsingtao complained on his microblog that his school now required rental fees for using cubicles in study lounges. According to online reports, cubicles have been priced from 5 yuan to 25 yuan per day, and that more than 500 of the school’s 700 study cubicles have already been rented out by students. 3. 变质内脏地沟油 biànzhì nèizàng dìgōuyóu -  A gang of 20 men in Zhejiang have been arrested for producing and selling a “new type of gutter oil,” made with the discarded rotten animal parts from slaughter houses. Here’s the story in Chinese.

4. 城管小贩互跪 chéngguǎn xiǎofàn hùguì – A city management official was confiscating an illegal street food vendor when the vendor owner suddenly knelt down to beg for mercy. Surprisingly, the official also knelt down, supposedly because he wanted to talk with the vendor owner on “equal grounds.” News reports on this have received widespread attention on microblogs. Some users praise the official for valuing equality rather than resorting to violence, while others think kneeling down is absurd and rather unnecessary. Here’s the story in Chinese.

5. 甘肃食物中毒 Gānsù shíwù zhòngdú – Roughly 50 guests of a wedding celebration in the Jingning county of Gansu experienced food poisoning, putting local authorities on high alert. Here’s the story in Chinese.

6. 地铁安检走过场 dìtiě ānjiǎn zǒuguòchǎng – Reporters put the Beijing subway’s safety checkpoints to test by attempting to bring a foldable knife into the station. To the reporter’s shock, he was able to pass the safety check with no deterrence. Given that foldable knives are banned from the city’s subway stations since the Olympics, news reports now accuse the subway safety checkpoints as complete waste of time for commuters. 7. 陆杰森 Lù Jiésēn – Last Saturday, a young Caucasian man in Nanjing sat with a beggar on the side of the streets and shared a bag of fries with the elderly woman for a friendly 20-minute chat. A few users uploaded pictures of this sight on their microblogs, not realizing that it would make the young man an online celebrity. 8. 台湾共识 Táiwān gòngshí – Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party is about to elect its new party chairman, and a recent public debate held on the cross-strait issues between the five candidates has attracted a great deal of attention from Chinese online users. Here’s the story in Chinese.

9. 美罗城女厕所遭偷拍 měiluóchéng nǚcèsuǒ zāo tōupāi – An anonymous user claimed on an online forum that secret cameramen have staked out in women’s bathroom stalls in a mall in Shanghai to record indecent videos for Japanese AV companies. The user posted a long string of pictures showing women unknowingly exposed in the lavatory environment with no censors. Local police forces have done a thorough sweep of all of the bathroom stalls in the mall but no hidden cameras were found. Here’s the story in Chinese.
